Concerts,
Elton John,
Ivy,
Ivy's favorite things
Okay...so I know it's been a month but I've had a busy month at home and at work and so the blog has been neglected.
The Elton John concert went very well. I picked Ivy up from Mom's got her dressed in her Elton John clothes and we headed downtown. She was excited and sand the whole time we were in the car. She chose to eat at Mellow Mushroom of course and while we were in the care waiting on Daddy to arrive she said she needed to check her lipstick to make sure she looked good for Elton John.

I know the pictures are terrible but I only had my iPod to use. We couldn't take Chris's big camera in and my pathetic cell phone doesn't take good recordings at all. Our seats were GREAT and we are a lot closer than we look in this picture.

Ivy spent most of her energy asking questions like "Why is he not here yet?" or "When is everyone else gonna get her?" or "Mommy, is he every going to come?" This went on for an hour. She couldn't sit still and she wouldn't shut up. I also had not prepared her for an opening act. So when two young guys came out on the stage and started playing cellos she was all "Who are they and why are they here they aren't Elton John!" But these two guys were amazing! The are called The 2Cellos. They played Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson, With or Without You by U2, and Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. Chris and I were impressed as well as everyone else that was there. By the time they got around to play Highway To Hell by AC/DC Ivy had decided that she liked then and she lost her mind. She jumped up and started head banging and yelling. We got several strange looks from people that seemed to say "What the.....?" and others just laughed. Chris and I laughed and just let her go to town. Rock n' Roll baby.
Here's a real video they did for Smooth Criminal.
And here is a live performance of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Seriously, check them out.
Then after all that I heard the beginning of Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting on those cellos and I knew Elton was coming. I knew that the whole crowd would hit the roof. So I stood up and put Ivy on top of my left shoulder and told her to watch the stage. And then he was there. He just walked right on that stage smiling and waving. I looked up at Ivy and her eyes were as big as saucers, mouth was wide open and she was just pointing to the ceiling. He jumped on the piano and started singing and she sang every lyric right along with him. I thought I would cry but I didn't. I just felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude that I was able to take my daughter to see on of music's greats that she loves so much.
He busted out about five or six songs in a row that Ivy knew all the lyrics to and she was in heaven. Then he played Candle in the Wind. She doesn't know that one and so we sat down and she got very still. It was pushing 8:45 by then and it was past her bedtime. She had taken a nap during the day but I think her adrenaline had started to wear off and she was fading fast. When he got to Tiny Dancer she lit up a little bit and sang along some with me but she was so tired. Chris looked at her and asked "Hey Ivy do you like this?" And she responded with "Oh Daddy this is great."
Around 9:45 I got up with her because she was becoming restless. I took her out to the concession area and pulled the ear plugs out of her ears. We talked a few minutes because I wanted to make sure she could still hear. She looked so very tired. I felt so bad. And even though I practically had to sell a kidney to afford the tickets I said "Ivy, if you want to leave with can." And she said "But I really want to hear Crocodile Rock...Ms. Angie said that's her favorite and I'm supposed to sing it really loud for her." So I put the ear plugs back in her ears and we went back to our seats. And in five minutes she was asleep in my lap.
I just let her sleep and sat there and enjoyed the rest of concert with my husband. Although it would have really been nice if people hadn't been up and down all night. Seriously, why is so hard for people to STAY IN THEIR SEATS!!!!
As 10:45 rolled around I starting to wonder how long he could possibly keep playing. I figured that he had to be winding down soon so I decided to wake Ivy up even though that meant playing with fire. Seriously, she's my daughter and if we get woke up by someone else....be prepared to pay for it. I knew that if I didn't wake her up and she didn't hear Crocodile Rock then I would pay for it anyway. And I swear when she finally opened her eyes and looked at the stage again he started singing Crocodile Rock. It took her a whole verse to realize what was going on but then she hugged my neck and leaned her head against mine and started singing. That was the last song before the encore and she said "Can we go home now?" I explained that he would come out and sing some more so we should wait.
He came back out and walked along the front of the stage and signed probably sixty autographs and then sat down at his piano and sang Your Song. Then he left. It was a perfect ending.
